Communicating in the British Office - from small-talk to accents, there will be lots of things to consider!
In this lesson, we will look at the difference between formal/informal languages, at the regional accents around the UK… and we will even cover some common slangs and idioms that you may encounter in the office.
This workshop will prepare for communicating more effectively with your British colleagues.

We will look at the differences between formal and informal conversations. You will get chance to practise adjusting your language for different conversation settings.

Have you ever met someone and struggled to understand what they’re saying because of their accent? Here, we will review common regional accents across the UK, along with some tips on how to better understand them.

You will likely encounter many idioms when working in the UK, along with ‘slang’ which can differ by region. Here, we will look at some commonly used idioms and practise using them.
Lesson Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, we hope you will:
Have developed an awareness of the difference between formal v informal language, and when to use this.
Feel more familiar with several regional accents.
Have developed an understanding of several commonly used idioms - to help you feel more confident when communicating in the workplace (and everyday life!).

Lesson Assessment
For your assessment this week, you will need to meet some new people!
You will need to speak to as many people as possible - in shops, restaurants, public transport - and make a note of:
Where their accent was from.
Any challenges in understanding their accent.
Any particular sounds you noticed in their accent.
Once you have completed the task, email your finished work to the following address: info@connectedbusinessenglish.com ready to discuss with your teacher.
